After a year since Mother Nature unleashed her fury on the US Gulf Coast, did you remember where you were last year? What you were doing when the news hit and were you thanking God you didn’t live there? I did.
And today, just like 365 days ago my feelings of sadness for all who were being affected by Katrina turned to anger as I watched the most powerful, wealthiest country in the world turn a blind eye towards it’s own people in their gravest hour of need. I remember sitting in awe as I watched the storm obliterate people’s lives.
Then I watched in disgust as the media seemed almost as voracious as Katrina as they scrambled to leave no stone unturned in their ‘human tragedy’ stories. Helicopters with cameras rolling hovering over people stranded on their roof tops. Camera crews on the ground capturing on film desperate people in desperate times struggling to survive. Depicting how the survivors had been reduced to wild animals in the struggle to survive.
The rampant looting footage made for some very captivating headlines on the 6 o’clock news. The victims, and survivors of Hurricane Katrina were quickly reduced to what seemed like a horrible experiment, by some ungodly being. Where was the help? Was it coming? When? I’m sure as Marine 1 was hovering overhead with the President and his advisors looking down upon the survivors, they were consoled with the fact that their suffering would soon end. That indeed their leaders would not allow them to suffer very much longer. That yes, the most powerful, wealthiest country in the world would free every resource at it’s disposal to make the suffering end. 1 more hour? 2 more hours? 6, 10, surely not more than 24 hours could go by without some sign of help coming? Could it?
Instead the cameras kept rolling, documenting the tragedy, the loss of life, all the while trying to take attention away from the ineptitude of the very Government Department established to aid the people in this type of situation. FEMA had been uncloaked as a mismanaged Governmet money pit. A false security blanket had been laid upon a nation still greiving from the effects of 9/11.
We all watched as the infighting and finger pointing in the Government started to take over the headlines as to who was ultimately responsible for the incompetance called FEMA. People continued to suffer all the while. The world had a laugh at the Government’s expense.
It’s been a year since the world witnessed the carnage left behind by Katrina. A city still lay in ruins. People’s lives, hopes and dreams still sit waiting for their Government’s help. 1 more day? 1 more month? 6, 8, surely not more than 12 more months could go by before help is on the way? Could it?
