Man rescued less than a mile from Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. , A man apparently trying to sneak into the United States was rescued from an ice floe less than a mile upstream from Niagara Falls, authorities said.
Guards from Ontario Power Generation said they heard the man screaming for help at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday near the company’s water intakes near Chippawa, Ontario.
“If he hadn’t been discovered,” said Peter Larsen, a control operator at the intakes, “he would have gone through one of those gates and then very likely could have been swept over the falls.”
Rescuers in boats plucked the shivering man from the ice floe and got him ashore.
Authorities said the unidentified 42-year-old man had an inflatable air mattress with him and was apparently trying to get to the United States. The ice chunk he was on apparently broke loose.
The man was treated for mild hypothermia before being charged by Canadian immigration authorities.

Why in the world would anybody trying to sneak into the United States think it wise to do it by going over Niagara Falls? Attempting this just proves him to be a mental midget. But attempting it with an air mattress just proves that he is in fact an idiot!

Unfortunately he was rescued before going over the edge, meaning his gene pool, as thin as it seems to be, remains intact.

Iranian Navy begins maneuvers in Persian Gulf

TEHRAN, March 22 (RIA Novosti) - The Iranian Navy has begun a series of military exercises in the Persian Gulf to test the capabilities of its domestically built naval weaponry, national television reported Thursday.

According to various intelligence reports, Iran has been spending a considerable share of its defense budget on its naval forces over the last decade. During an exercise last November, it test-launched three new models of domestically manufactured anti-ship missiles with extended strike range.

“The Navy will demonstrate its defense capability and test Iranian-produced weaponry during the [current] exercises,” said Admiral Sajjad Kuchaki, commander of the Iranian Navy.

The exercises, which will last until March 30, will highlight simultaneous close-in and stand-off attacks, involving destroyers, missile boats, submarines, and combat aircraft, he said.

The current wargames are the fourth since the beginning of 2007 and are largely considered to be part of preparations for possible U.S. and Israeli strikes on its nuclear facilities.

The international press has in recent months actively discussed the possibility of such strikes, but almost all key figures in the Bush administration have repeatedly refuted the existence of any plans to do so.

However, U.S. Vice President Richard Cheney has not ruled out a military strike, saying all options were on the table.

The US already has 3 Carrier Battle Groups in the Persian Gulf, along with the British Naval presence, couple this with the recent abduction of the 15 British Sailors by Iran and you’ve got a powder keg waiting to be lit.

Why would Bush require so much firepower in the Persian Gulf for a war against Iraq which has almost no coastline in the first place? It looks as though the pieces are falling into place for the Bush/Cheney Administration’s attack on Iran.

Would the ‘REAL’ Vice President please stand up?

As released by the Associated Press. Vice President Dick Cheney on Saturday accused the Democrat-led House of not supporting troops in Iraq and of sending a message to terrorists that America will retreat in the face danger.

Cheney called it a myth that “one can support the troops without giving them the tools and reinforcements they need to carry out their mission.”

What?

If I remember correctly, there were reports out of Iraq shortly after the war started that American troops were resorting to picking through scrap heaps to find materials to put on their vehicles for protection. And why were troops arriving in Iraq for active duty lacking personal protective vests, and other equipment to help make them safer? Why weren’t the calls from U.S Generals asking for more troops heeded in the beginning?

You complain about the Democrats not giving support to the troops now, but where were you four years ago? You claim the Democrats are not giving the troops in Iraq the materials they need to do their jobs now. But four years ago what did the Bush Administration spend the money on when the war financing spigot was wide open?

Mr. Cheney, every time you speak the world wonders if you are speaking as the Vice President of the United States, or the mouthpiece for Halliburton. What exactly is YOUR agenda Mr. Cheney?

Bush will use Veto

In a narrow victory, the House has passed a bill requiring a deadline for troop withdrawal out of Iraq. Immediately after the vote, President Bush, in all his pompous, arrogant glory declared that he would veto the bill, accusing lawmakers of “provoking an unnecessary confrontation”.

Excuse me while I read that again! “Provoke unnecessary confrontation”!

Isn’t that the kettle calling the pot black? Who provoked an unnecessary confrontation in the first place?

In an intricate web of lies and deceit, his administration was able to convince the public that Saddam Hussein not only had weapons of mass destruction, but was also the kingpin of terrorist activity around the world. So, with the world looking on, he got his wish. Iraq was invaded, and the Hussein Regime was toppled. No weapons of mass destruction were found, nor any evidence that Saddam was even close to acquiring nuclear capabilities.

Amid public protests from around the world to stop the war in Iraq, Mr. Bush is still convinced that the war is a necessary battle against the “evil doers”. He still contends that the world is, and will be a safer place because of his actions in Iraq.

Unfortunately what President Bush still does not realize, is that actions speak louder than words.
Public support for the war is at an all time low, and regardless of what he says or thinks the world is not a safer place because of the war in Iraq.

He keeps claiming that democracy in Iraq is just around the corner, but yet snubs his nose to the democratic process at home by using his power of veto to kill a bill because its not what he wants. Listening to his rhetoric during his radio address today is reminiscent of the arguments one often hears from the sandbox when one child won’t let the other one play with his new toy!

The bottom line is the American people have spoken. Its time to get the troops out of Iraq, and bring them home. If democracy is to take a foot hold in Iraq, then its the Iraqi people that are going to have to fight for it.

Quite possibly the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard

In a story reported by Reuters, a Texas politician has proposed that pregnant women considering abortion be offered $500 not to end their pregnancies.

Republican State Sen. Dan Patrick, who also is a conservative radio talk show host, said on Friday the money might convince the women to go ahead and have babies, and then give them up for adoption.

He then goes on to qualify his proposal by stating “If this incentive would give pause and change the mind of 5 percent of those woman, that’s 3,000 lives. That’s almost as many people as we’ve lost in Iraq.”

I thought buying babies was illegal, but I guess not in Texas.
