Things just aren”t getting better for the human race
By “us”, I mean the human race. Homo sapiens is defined as, the only surviving hominid; species to which modern man belongs; bipedal primate having language and ability to make and use complex tools; brain.
I personally am starting to think that this statement is all a lie. Somewhere along the evolutionary process, we zigged when we should have zagged. Maybe this has nothing to do with evolution at all, but rather the psychology of man. Yes, I think this is a psychological disorder of man as a whole.
Ever since man discovered the first tool, which I believe would have been a rock; he quickly discovered how useful it was. Using it to pound things, grind things, and sharpen things. He also quickly learned that it made an excellent weapon. This was the beginning of the end.
Through the ages, history has taught us one constant thing. Man is at the top of the food chain. Supposedly because we have a brain, language, and the ability to make and use complex tools. The one tool that has kept us at the top would undoubtedly be the weapon. We know how to make and use weapons, other animals don”t. Man has guns, whereas our closest evolutionary cousin still flings feces at each other to get their points across.
History has also taught us that the race of man is a barbaric race. Man is the only species on Earth that kills it”s own kind for no reason at all. Animals will hunt and kill other animals for food. That is how the food chain works. Nature”s system of checks and balances. Man on the other hand does not eat it”s own kind, but we still kill each other.
Man has done some pretty evil things to man throughout the ages. We slaughter each other for territory, we slaughter each other based on race, religion, ideologies, or any number of other “reasons”. We are the only animal on Earth that will kill “just because we can”.
When I was much younger, I remember my school teacher telling our class how much better things in the future were going to be for us. There would be no more wars. There would be peace all around the world. There would be no more sickness. We would be living on the moon, or possibly even on a planet that was farther away. I remember being excited; I couldn”t wait to grow up.
As I was growing up, I realized that there didn”t seem to be an end to war, in fact more wars were breaking out on a regular basis. World peace also seemed to be unobtainable as more and more countries started pointing their fingers at their neighbors. Instead of the sicknesses of my day being cured, new diseases were being discovered that had no cure. I quickly learned about the “one step forward, two steps back” phrase and what it meant.
I”ve grown up now. I”m a middle aged hippie type that is just trying to figure where we as a species have gone wrong. I don”t have a plethora of initials after my name, and I definitely don”t profess to know as much about psychology as Tom Cruise does. I”m just trying to understand the whole concept of Man”s inhumanity towards Man thing. And truthfully, I don”t get it. I probably never will.
I just hope for our children”s and their children”s sake that some day very soon, man will evolve from it”s present mind state, and realize there are much more important things that we could be using our brains for other than killing.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those who lost loved ones in the Virginia Tech shootings earlier today.
