Harriet Miers should be brought up on contempt charges

Executive privilege seems to be Bush’s security blanket lately. He’s obviously hiding something, and he’s using “executive privilege” to attempt to keep it hidden.

Former White House counsel Harriet Miers’ decision to ignore the subpoena and refuse to appear before the House Judiciary Committee investigating the firings of nine U.S. attorneys is a complete and total slap to the face of the country’s judicial system.

Showing up and answering “some” questions, as President Bush’s former political director, Sara Taylor did one day before is one thing. Or even pulling a stunt like Attorney General Gonzales did by conveniently “forgetting” many details of the firings when asked by the committee, was somewhat expected. At least these people put their asses in the seats and faced the music, not very well mind you, but at least they appeared before the committee.

But Miers’ downright refusal to show up is totally unacceptable. Mind you, it was Bush himself who instructed Miers to not even appear before the committee, claiming “she has absolute immunity from compelled Congressional testimony,” and we all know how well Bush upholds the laws of this country!

Miers was subpoenaed to appear before the committee, and she should be forced to comply, regardless of what her former boss tells her to do. She should be held in contempt of Congress and locked up until she complies with the subpoena, and respects the law like the rest of us private citizens are expected to do.
