Rove Explains Bush’s Use of Signing Statements

Karl Rove, speaking to students at the University of Pennsylvania last night explained Bush’s use of the famed ‘Signing Statements.’

One member of the audience alleged that Mr. Bush had simply used these statements as a measure to arbitrarily exercise power over intelligence and terrorism issues, particularly warrantless wiretapping. Mr. Rove noted that when the president issues a signing statement, he does so to express his view that a provision within a law violates the U.S. Constitution and that he is discarding that provision in accordance with his duty as commander in chief. Those who disagree with his doing so, meanwhile, can take on the White House in the courtroom if they feel strongly enough about it, he said.

Personally, the arrogance of the ‘turd blossom’ is infuriating. Especially when he mocks us by saying, “those who disagree with his doing so, meanwhile, can take on the White House in the courtroom if they feel strongly enough about it.” Yeah, right Karl, like we haven’t heard “Executive Privilege” from the Bush Administration enough already!

I also feel that Bush’s signing statements have also been used to violate the U.S. Constitution when his views differ from a law passed by the House and Senate. Warrantless wiretapping is a gross violation of the U.S. Constitution, but in Bush’s opinion he issues a signing statement and ‘presto’ it gives him authority over the Constitution! This is just plain wrong, and an abuse of power.

And on a final note from the world of Rove. He laid this little gem of wisdom on the students as well.
“History has a funny way of deciding things,” he said. “Sometimes history sends you things, and 9/11 came our way.”

And I’m sure history will decide Karl’s fate and the rest of the Bush Administration’s transgressions against the U.S Constitution in due time as well!

One Response to “Rove Explains Bush’s Use of Signing Statements”

  1. If the President believes that a provision in a bill is unconstitutional he has the obligation to veto the whole thing. There is no line item veto. Bush has been using signing statements in an unprecedented way, to make law contrary to the expressed intent of the Congress.

You are correct in saying that history will judge him harshly.
