Bush Indictment Passes in Small Town, But it Speaks Volumes

Brattleboro, VT passed a measure today calling for the indictment of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney if they ever visit the town. The measure passed by a margin of 217 (2,012 -1,795) votes.

So now that the measure passed, all that needs to be done is somehow get Bush and or Cheney to unwittingly enter the town, right? Not quite. The measure that passed is symbolic. “It really carries no weight,” said Brattleboro Town Clerk Annette Cappy. “Our town attorney has no legal authority to draw up any papers to allow our police officers to do so, but the gentleman who initiated the petition, got the signatures, wanted it on the ballot to make a statement.”

Even though the indictment will never come to fruition, the fact that it passed speaks volumes for the democratic process in this country on a few levels. Firstly, it proves that the will of the people’s voice can be heard, as it was intended by this country’s founding fathers. A motion was voted upon, and every vote mattered. No hanging chads, no disputes over rigged electronic voting machines, and no superdelegates imposing their will on the outcome of the vote. One person, one vote, and the outcome was decided.

Secondly, and equally important it shows that “we the people” are not being listened to on Capital Hill. The population of this country are supposed to be represented by our elected officials who are to hear our voices and act on them. But so many times our elected representatives act on their own behalf or the wants of the special interest groups, under the guise of “its what the people want,” when in fact its not what we wanted at all, but didn’t have a say in the matter.

The measure that passed in Brattleboro today was symbolic. It was symbolic of one person’s voice being heard, and having the town’s government of act on his voice. It was symbolic of the voters of Brattleboro deciding the fate of a measure put before them by a vote. It was symbolic of how a government should act. A government of the people, by the people, for the people.

  1. And it is symbolic that the modern Left has no respect for the rule of law or for the Constitution they claim to be protecting. It’s called a Bill or Attainder and it is explicitly made illegal in the Constitution. It is symbolic that the Modern Left has no idea of what a Republic is and why it is important in the protection of every person’s Rights.

Had this measure called for the arrest, however symbolically, of everyone who protests the war in Iraq people like you would be raising the rafters. We live in a Republic which is based on the rule of law rather than a democracy which is ruled by the current will of the people. We shouldn’t be happy that the spirit of the Constitution was “symbolically” stabbed even if the target is someone we despise. Because that worm is all to capable of turning.
