W.H. Denies Dissent is Punished. But Rather Incompetence is Rewarded
After the resignation of Admiral Fallon as commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East, over the perception of a disagreement with Bush’s policies on Iran, has the White House in full denial mode.
Fallon said in a statement announcing his resignation of the U.S. Central Command that “recent press reports suggesting a disconnect between my views and the president’s policy objectives have become a distraction at a critical time and hamper efforts in the Centcom region.”
These accusations seem to have everybody in the Pentagon and White House pointing fingers and saying, “who, me?” White House Press Secretary Dana Perino tried her best to whitewash the accusations as best she could by saying, “The president welcomes robust and healthy debate,” she said. “He has many members of his administration that represent different viewpoints. He has dissenting views on a variety of issues that get worked out through a policy process that is usually not fed out in the press. There’s no one in the administration that is suggesting anything other than a diplomatic approach to Iran.”
As my B.S. meter red-lined, I wondered just how Bush’s “policy process” works when he listens to viewpoints that are different from his own. Bush’s egoistic “We’ll go it alone” attitude seems to indicate that he rarely listens to “healthy debate.” Either that or he threatens to send those that differ with his opinions on a hunting trip with Dick Cheney!
The White House might deny punishing those who oppose Bush policies, but they sure as hell don’t punish those who royally screw up either. As long as your a loyal Bushie, you can’t do any wrong in his eyes. Examples here, here, here, here, and here.
As far as Perino’s comment that “there’s no one in the administration that is suggesting anything other than a diplomatic approach to Iran.” I can’t believe she actually was able to say that with a straight face! The Bush Administration has been beating the war drums for a while now against Iran. Admiral Fallon was at least willing to stand up to Bush by saying, that an attack on Iran “will not happen on my watch”.
Well, Admiral Fallon’s watch has ended, only time will tell how the Iran story unfolds from here.
