Is U.S. Greenback the World’s New Peso?

Remember the day, not too long ago that the U.S. dollar was the currency of choice around the world? No matter where you went, the dollar was always welcomed, and greedily accepted. Whatever you wanted, anywhere in the world, if you had greenbacks, you could get it. For example going to Guatemala, a couple of dollars would buy enough Quetzals to keep you in Gallo Beers for most of the day. Ahh, the good ol’ days!

Not so much anymore is the greenback as widely welcomed, especially in Europe where the dollar is not king anymore. Two dollars only buys 1.5 Euros, which makes it less desirable for money exchangers to buy or sell from tourists. Hell, the U.S. dollar only buys 99 Canadian cents! It’s hard to imagine that the U.S. dolar is now considered a ’second class’ currency!

I remember the first time I came back from Canada. I had about $50 Canadian dollars that I wanted to change back to U.S. dollars. At the time (about 30 years ago) I found it next to impossible to find a bank that would take the ‘lottery ticket’ money in exchange for dollars. I finally gave up in frustration trying to get rid of the stuff.

I wonder now that the dollar is suffering on a global level, how many tourists that come this country ‘can’t wait to get rid of the stuff’ before they go home for fear of it being less valued by the time they exchange it back to their home currency?

I just never thought I’d see the day where the U.S. dollar wasn’t ‘king’!
