Sean “Slick” McCormick Sells Passportgate
Unauthorized access to the three major presidential candidates’ passport records is serious stuff. So serious that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice offered her apologies to the candidates personally. Rice, speaking of the conversation she had with Senator Obama regarding the breach of his passport record:
“I told him that I was sorry, and I told him that I, myself, would be very disturbed if I learned that somebody had looked into my passport file. And, therefore, I will stay on top of it and get to the bottom of it.”
She will “stay on top of it and get to the bottom of it.” Sounds eerily familiar to Bush’s statement regarding the economy doesn’t it? Well, while getting to the bottom of it, they discovered that there were a ’series’ of breaches of all the presidential candidates’s records. Not an isolated case, but a series of breaches which the State Department chalked up to “imprudent curiosity!”
That’s bullshit and the State Department knows it! Imprudent curiosity is looking up your ex-spouse’s passport record, or your college Professor’s, or your neighbor’s with the yappy dog that won’t stop barking at 2 in the morning. No, the breach of the candidates’ records was deliberate. Why would a State Department contracted employee have reason to look into these records? What could a lowly employee do with the information they find in a passport record, other than give it to somebody else who could use the information?
After Rice gave her apologies to the candidates in private, it was time for State Department Spokesman Sean McCormick to appear and sell the story to the media. I say “sell” because watching McCormick is like watching a slick insurance agent trying to sell you something you don’t really need. The sly grins, the hand gestures, the shifting glances, all reek of a late night infomercial sales shtick! Instead of selling Ginzu Knives though, he’s selling the impropriety of the State Department’s contractor’s actions.
