Iraq Cracking Down on Seat Belt Offenders

Iraqi motorists have been warned to buckle up while behind the wheel, or they face a fine of $15,000 dinars ($12.50), as the police officers are starting to get tough.

Seat belt laws, are you kidding me? With all the problems facing Iraqis in their daily struggles, the government makes cracking down on seat belt offenders a high priority! This is what progress means I guess.

A traffic commander for the capital’s Rusafah district defends the crackdown:

“It is part of the healing process of this country and of Baghdad to enforce the law, law by law.”

Yeah, but seat belt laws? Well, I guess if you are going to start enforcing traffic laws, might as well start with the sillier ones first!
