$20 million line in the sand dropped
What’s another wasted $20 million in the fight against illegal immigration? The $20 million “virtual fence” turned out to be a $20 million “real joke,” as it fails to do anything constructive.
The fence project, known as “Project 28″ probably looked good on paper, but in the real world couldn’t stand up to it’s hype. The hi-tech fence consists of nine electronic surveillance towers along a 28-mile section of border southwest of Tucson. A glaring shortcoming of the project was the time lag between the electronic detection of movement along the border and the transmission of a camera image to agents patrolling the area.
In other words, by the time the fence detected a breach and notified the Border Patrol, the suspect or suspects were already in Downtown Tuscon sipping on a margarita!
The government could have used the $20 million to hire more Border Patrol Agents, and instead of the fence strung a rope across the border with signs saying keep out! It’s not as glamorous as a “virtual fence,” but just as effective!
