McCain Stumbles So Much, He Might Break a Hip
McCain just admitted something we already suspected; that the invasion of Iraq was more for oil reasons than any other. Regardless of the spin the Bush Administration has tried to put on the invasion, we all suspected that is was for their oil, not the WMD’s. And John McCain’s Straight Talk Express just went crashing through that wall, without even slowing down!
During a town hall meeting on Friday, McCain was talking about gaining independence from Middle Eastern oil, that his energy policy will eliminate when he let out this little nugget of “straight talk”:
My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will , that will then prevent us, that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East.
But later in the day, aboard his “straight talk flyer,” he tried to pick himself up from his now all too familiar “stumbles.” First his Press Secretary, defended McCain’s remark as talking about America’s involvement in the first Gulf War. McCain then tried to clarify his remarks himself:
I was talking about that we had fought the first Gulf War for several reasons. One of them was Saddam Hussein’s invasion and that’s just not something that’s acceptable…but also we didn’t want them to have control over the oil, and that part of the world is critical to us because of our dependency on foreign oil. And it’s more important than in any other part of the world.
But a reporter asked McCain if he was actually “thinking about the first Gulf War” when he made the statement, McCain replied:
“No, I was thinking about- it’s not hard to- we will not,” McCain stumbled. “By eliminating our dependency on foreign oil, we will not have to have our national security threatened by a cut off of that oil. Because we will be dependent, because we won’t be dependent, we will no longer be dependent on foreign oil. That’s what my remarks were.”
I wonder if he could clarify that statement a little further, because not only does he seem confused by what he is saying, I’m sure the rest of us are as well! I think its the whole “we will be dependent, won’t be dependent” thing that is a little muddy! The media as usual just brushed it off as another “stumble.”
How much longer is he going to be able to get away with “It was a stumble,” and “It was a senior moment,” not to mention the famous “I misspoke” excuses. I’m starting to think that with so many frequent “stumbles,” poor McCain might actually break his hip on the next one!
